| be careful when you read statistics published by government or NGOs; they tend to willingly or unintentionally obscure the facts. Many immigrant families aer considered "poor" because one or both of the parents are listed as unemployed. In reality, many of them just work under the table for cash, as they do in the US and other immigrant societies. Also as a child of immigrants I received 0 assistance from the government. My parents encouraged my to study hard and eventually i was accepted to Columbia University on scholarship. I think that rather than giving handouts to people, the parents need to take some responsibility about educating themselves about what they can offer their children (ie private lessons, after sschool programmes etc) just as my parents did. They were deeply involved in my education. SOme of my peers` parents were less involved, allowing the "system" to educate their children- those kids are not today`s pizza delivery boys... |
