| Israel has been called in the past Americas unsinkable aircraft carrier. Up until Obama Israel with Americas blessing the regional policeman and so joining NATO as a Mediterranean policeman is a natural extension of that. NATO needs local countries to help them patrol their own waters because it allows recourses to strech further. Israel with its modern missile boats and submarines is ideal for a role like this. It gives Israel military influence well beyond its own borders whilst flying the flag of NATO as an excuse. Also an attack against one NATO member is considered an attack on them all so suddenly it gives Israel the full might of NATO to help with its own defense. Its also prestigious and will be a respected military power. Also Israeli navy want to build their new missile boats at home instead of buying American boats if the Israeli navy is working with NATO I am sure there are some countries who would be willing to do deals give Israel money to help fund the navy. |
