| Germany built the first 2 subs to Israeli specifications ( a complete redesign not off the shelf design of subs of the same class thats exported to others ) free of charge & the third Israel paid full price for in 1991. There are another 2 on order which were built at a price subsidised by the German government. Although they were built to Israeli specifications and it wasn`t an off the shelf sub of the same class it wasn`t built for carrying nukes, these were all adjustments made in Israel after delivery. There was alot of anger in the German parliament over this and they almost refused to sell the second batch on order over it. If Germany hadn`t agreed to sell Israel subs we would have just gone to Russia who would have been happy to sell no questions asked. Israel was determined to replace its submarine fleet and to build subs to its own specifications There are also plenty of countries in the world ( most the ME included ) who have WMD programs and submarines so why not Israel? |
