If Torah law is to govern the military, then see Deut. 20, 5-8, about exemptions: any man who hasn`t yet held a home dedication on a new house; any man who hasn`t had a chance to harvest a vineyard he planted; a man gotten engaged but has not married; and of course, "anyone afraid and disheartened."
Also, according to the Torah, IDF soldiers should be able to bring back foreign virgin captives and take them as wives.
As for women, strictly enforced literal Torah law would offer women little beyond what the Taliban do, in the military or out. (We`re already seeing the demand for gender segregated buses.) Perhaps our Justice Minister will soon propose stoning for adultery, as the Torah requires? |
