The Shermeister dude has it all wrong. Unlike Christians who make a policy of "Christening" their children in a "Church". It don`t matter where you perform a circumcision, and many a Brit Milah occurs at home. Yeah, bozo, stuff like mezuzot, kashrut, Shabbat meals, Passover Seders, and a score of Halachot start at home.
Indeed, in places were people didn`t go to synagogues very often, Judaism was kept "at home", and the children knew who they were, and why they were Jewish.
The reason, perhaps, Secularists like to make the synagogue the target for their jibes is that its a cheap shot. Soldiers often come home, kiss the mezuzah, eat kosher, and might even say Kriat Shma befre they hit the sack . . . and never get to services. |
