| Rather than admit powerlessness, inability to stop aggression, or fear at the cost, politicians prefer to engage in meaningless "tough" diplomacy to pretend to their pubiics that they are really acting. The aggressors, of course, are not fooled. And eventually neither are the democratic voters, as Abraham Lincoln noted. Perhaps they will decide to intervene in the internal affairs of a perceived weaker power, Israel, factions of which are embarked on their own little theocratic projects. |
