Prof. Dror`s analysis is comprehensive but one which surely Netanyahu knows. Any sensible observer must conclude that the intention of Netanyahu is to kill the peace process, since, as Dror points, the demand for the recognition of the Jewish character of Israel (whatever that means exactly) will be rejected a priori by Arab statesmen. If Netanyahu has his way in insisting on this demand (which seems unlikely given US current stand), he will give a blow to the peace process but also to democracy in Israel. Liberal democracy in Israel (admittedly already very compromised by the Israeli identity schizophrenia) is not one of Netanyahu`s priority concerns, but it will be victimized as an unintended consequence of his peace-stalling tactics. Prof. Dror, with his proposed alternative "solution," does not seem to care about this either.
To sum up, it seems that Israeli law regarding citizenship happens while Israel is busy dealing with the Arabs. |
