Under Kings David, Saul, and about 80 years of the last Judges Israel seems to have had true independence.

Solomon had to compromise to maintain independence, taking wives of his neighbors to ally them but alienating religious leaders by bringing the wives` gods wives into Israel -- even male prostitutes into the Temple.

After Solomon, Israel was a client state most of the time of either Egypt of Babylonia. The Assyrians carried away 10 of the 12 tribes before Pharaoh could intervene. Rebellion against its Babylonian rulers, brought captivity in Babylon, until the Persians used Jews to garrison Israel as they used them to garrison Egypt.

The Jews hoped the Greeks would help free them of the Persian yoke, but they received instead a Greek Yoke.

Likewise the Romans were to be saviors ridding Israel of the Greeks, but we know where that led.

Today Israel seems to be a client state of the US and UK. How history repeats itself! Is this genuine independence?
