| I do not get the argument. Would anyone argue that the state would have to provide consular services to an Israeli abroad who owed and refused to pay taxes to the state? Or if he\she were wanted in Israel for having committed another crime such as a violation of our environmental laws or running a brothel or whatever? In any country that has a draft as does Israel, failure to present yourself is a crime, period. In our security situation a draft is an existential need. The fact that we do not insist that haredi citizens serve this country is a scandal and hilul hashem(desecration of G-d`s name), but one stupidity is not a justification for another. We should fix both. |
