| How amusing. Over sixty years ago the Labor Zionists who were founding Israel made a `deal` intended to appease the Orthodox and gain their cooperation in the necessities required to preserve the life of all Israelis and found a state. The `deal` gave control of what the Labor Zionists consider unimportant, the control of religion to the Orthodox so that the Labor Zionists could fight the war that needed to be won without unnecessary obstruction from the `religious.` Now, long after Israel became a nation which gave legal equality to women - to the extent of requiring service in the armed forces - the Orthodox have decided women are unfit to be the equals of men. How droll? And how quaint. Israel has found itself in the same dilemma that the US is in. The extreme right has chosen to impose it`s religious mania upon people who are more secular than religious. The concept of `religious zionism` impossible sixty years ago. The devoutly orthodox opposed Zionism. |
