Title:More on why Blachar should not be WMA president
Name:Ben Alofs
City: BangorState: Gwynedd
When he was president of the Israel Medical Association Blachar came out in defense of professor Eran Dolev, then IMA head of Ethics (sic!), in 1999. In an interview with a visiting delegation from the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture professor Dolev stated that "a couple of broken fingers" during the interrogation of Palestinians was worthwhile for the information it might garner.
As a member of Israel`s establishment Blachar consistently remained silent even when the principles of medical ethics were blatantly violated.
An example is the psychological blackmail exerted on very sick patients from the Gaza Strip seeking life saving treatment, which is only available in Israel. The Shin Bet would only allow these patients into Israel if they would become informers. If they refused these patients were denied entry. The response of Blachar to outrages of this type has always been a deafening silence. He is therefore unfit to be president of the WMA.
