If a religion insists that a person`s religious identity is tied to the religious identity of the mother, then the religion introduces ethnic/racial criteria, which is to say, criteria that are hereditary rather than ascribed.

Modern legislation differentiates between religion and ethnicity/race, while ancient (religious) directives conflate the two. The UK court in effect forces the UK Jewish community to adjust to modern distinctions or else give up government subsidy. It`s as simple as that -- the real mess about religion, ethnicity, and citizenship is in Israel, but that`s a different story...
