Obama spoke in Cairo. He spok to the Muslim Umma. His aim is finding a topin in Israel he could atack head on and find the most ample base of agreement internationally, in the Muslim world, and in internal Israeli politics.
Setllements are exactly that punching ball. Approachin the Mislim umma after a row with Israel gives him a sature to hear Muslim interests, and and renders hiome more pallatable to be heard about his interests.
But try to find an issue about Israel`s wellbeing that is less harmful to Israel`s security than settlements. You won`t fine anyone. Obama is not withdrawing political support in the UN. He is underlinin the eternal nature of US - Israel relations. He is not threatening to cut the billions in military aid. He is not threatening Israel in any other way that stating the obvious, what all rational being sknow: Settlements not in block contiguous to Israel will have to go, or its citizens will become Palestinian citizens.
