...EMPOWERED Hamas for one eternity, by promising Palestinian moderates a lot—and then giving them nothing. As a result, we made the moderates look like impotent suckers to the Palestinian public. This pissed off the public and drove them to Hamas. So now we have no choice but to deal with Hamas sometimes. Sucks to be us—but it`s our fault.
For years, by the way, we characterized the breaking of our promises to the moderates as a "punishment" for the moderates—because they didn`t do a good enough job of cracking down on, you guessed it, Hamas. In fact, Hamas getting away with even one act of terrorism was enough for us to punish the moderates, even if they successfully halted other acts.
The moderates had to be perfect or we wouldn`t give them diddly. But nobody can be perfect; so the moderates were screwed.
All Hamas had to do to beat the moderates completely was get away with an occasional act of terrorism, whereupon we obligingly punished the moderates. We were Hamas` instrument. |
