A settlemnt freeze is absolutely necessary. The settlement enterprise has been a huge disaster and will go down in history as an example of the "March of folly". The Israeli argument that a prohibition on settlements was not included in the Oslo accords, while correct, should not have been seen as a license to increase the population to the extent they did.
However the Israelis, have made a couple of offers to leave the West Bank, to exchange about 5% for land in Israel and to share Jerusalem. The most recent offer was only several months ago. The Palestinians have rejected these offers. This conflict has always been, and remains about the so called "right of return". A settlment freeze is a great idea. It won`t lead to peace any time soon. |
