Understandably, maybe, since Israeli politicians have constantly stated that the Shalit case is a main obstacle in the peace process. But we should expect more from journalists than falling for such made up arguments. The main obstacles are that there isn`t a majority in Israel for allowing a real Palestinian state in the west bank, to solve the settlement issue, which would obligate moving hundreds of thousands of Israelis, the grip of right wingers on the government, the Jerusalem question, and the distrust and hatred of Arabs in general. On the palestian side, it`s the rift between Fatah and Hamas, the impossibility to control radical, terrorist fringe groups, the Jerusalem problem, too, and the distrust and hatred of Jews in general.

Those are much dire problems than ending the imprisonment of a single IDF soldier. So, sadly, the optimism of the author of this story is mostly unsubstantiated. Well, hope springs eternal...
