He is simply an unlucky fellow who became a bargain object in the struggle between Israel and Hamas. Both sides are exploiting him, the Israelis for propaganda purposes and the Palestinians as a lever to enforce some concessions.
But he isn`t the key to any solution, which can be proven with a simple argument: Shalit is a hostage since three years. The "situation" exists since 42 years. There wasn`t any real development, just stagnation, before Shalit became prisoner, and there won`t be progress towards peace after he is freed. This is just a sideshow, and the main problems are much more difficult to solve.
I hope the poor guy is freed soon, so that the suffering of him and his family stops. But I don`t have any illusions that this will magically advance a peaceful solution to the situation. That`s just a castle in the air. |
