| One would think that this man who has suffered as such would reflect on the suffering Palestinians endure every day at the hands of the Israeli occupation regime. He might even join with his Palestinian counterparts and ask for the release of Palestinian political prisoners--over 1000 Palestinians sit in jail in administrative detention, meaning they have no charges and no right to hear the claims against them, and still further are convicted of being a member of Hamas; not even participating in any resistance but merely being a member of a group, they have committed no greater crime than Gilad, who was part of an occupying army enforcing a blockade on a starving population. Some members of Hamas who were kidnapped after Shalit was captured as revenge have just recently been released, eliciting no comment from Noam Shalit. Unfortunately this seems typical in Israeli society: there is no recognition of the common suffering of others. |
