I agree if one speaks of nation-states intervening militarily. One could in restrospect ask which nation-state (s) would have intervened in any military way against the mighty USSR. Nobody dared, nobody cared beyond emotions and lip service. Realpolitik, yes. I see your point (and you have repeated it to me during the last days).

But 2009 is not 1956. Forget about militarily intervening nation-states with tanks a-la-Bush.
What about Nixon-Kissinger in Chile (where they paid the truck-drivers` long strike and nurtured Pinochet and his thugs)? (I know the example is sinister, but you can see my point) What about helping internet-cel-phone-twitter alternatives to be open for Iranians to use? What about setting up Foundations for every dead
protestor? Thousands of ideas can be brought up.
