Miron,
The point here is that this good, sound article by Benjamin Hartman, shows the limits of people power, in Iran 2009 and generally. That people power requires channels of expression and in some, few cases, external help to coalesce into regime change. Hartman quotes Hungary 1956 because just like Czechoslovakia 1968, nobody could prevent their people power revolution to be smashed by the USSR.
There`s no need to offend me, you don`t know me. My family on my mother`s side is Hungarian. Many came out in 1956. Nobody helped them. (Igen, en beszelek magyarul - yes, I do speak Hungarian).
The USSR didn`t create Czechoslovakia. It was in 1918 when the soviets were busy with other bloody issues. As for shedding tears because Czechoslovakia split between Czechs and Slovaks: No bullet was fired. No blood was spilled. Their common integration into the EU renders them something like England and Scotland. Frankly, I don`t see your point, nor the need to mock anybody. |
