It seems that most have short-term memories.
The Jewish-Yemini comunity was large, happy and well integrated into everyday Yemini life. Jews were not, as a rule, discriminated against, in fact in many cases were honored. In the 1940`s and early 50`s the zionists in Eretz-Israel / Palestine were forcing "avodah ivrit" wherever they could, and were in need of cheap labor to replace the low-paid Palestinian population. Thus the goverment of isreal, using the Mossad and other sources, arranged for the expulsion of the Jews from Yemen. These Jews were uprooted and evacuated to the tent-slums around Tel-Aviv, all under israel goverment coordination explicitly as cheap labor. While it is heroically "remembered" in zionist lore as "Operation Magic Carpet" what is forgotton is that the expulsion itself was arranged, organized and paid for by israel and the Jewish Agency. |
