The question of the root causes has not been answered by Netanyahu nor by Mr. Levi and it should. As someone who was born in Mandatory Palestine to European immigrants brought up there and served in the IDF but long since had moved to the U.S I have no Biblical attachment to the country, only the long view of hitory.
The root cause is plain and simple the rewriting of Jewish history by leaping 2 millenia and imposing that history on people who had lived in Land and who do not share in that history. For the Jews the history of the Land is synonymous with their own history not with the history of other people. Those who wrote the Bible had the same attitude. Those Jews who had lived in Palestine for centuries were part of Palestine- they belonged to the Land not the other way around. The Zionist movement barged into the Land and into the lives of those who had lived there for generations. Palestine in its very long history never belonged to one people only. I doubt it ever will. |
