They`re not going to sit down with Netanyahu because they don`t want to legitimize his current proposals. Who else recalls Israel adopting this view in the Madrid rounds (they wouldn`t sit with the PLO, preferring, instead, to decide who the legitimate interlocutors would be.)
To invoke `37 as an argument just seems, well, silly. Was anyone currently involved in Palestinian politics even alive then?
As I have been arguing, if Netanyahu persists in his positions I see the US unilaterally recognizing Palestinian statehood. Palestinian statehood, afterall, doesn`t have anything to do with Israel. Then, state to state, Palestine and Israel might negotiate something, with US assistance.
Meanwhile, Palestinians don`t have to recognize Israel as Jewish. Israel can`t even recognize Israel (recent Russians) as Jewish. As to that other thing, with the demilitarizing, I think it`s a mistake. A big tank is easier to hit than a pesky terrorist, and Obama can re-flag them as American. |
