The pressure on Egypt and Syria is simple.
Israel says a divided Palestinian government is no government at all.
So Egypt and Syria put pressure on the Palestinians to create a `unity government."
This is the action of desperate governments.
If there is an Unity Government of Fatah and Hamas, then Israel will reject it as illegitimate because Hamas is involved.
Were Hamas to disappear, then the ghost of Arafat would be deemed reason to reject any negotiations with Fatah. . .
What a curious contrary to Europe in the late 1930s.
Back then there was no consensus to try and head off the war that Germany desired.
Now there is a broad consensus to try and head off the war, but without strong leadership - spell that sanctions - by the US and the EU, the consensus is meaningless.
I think Israel will defeat the peace it fears and get the war it wishes for.
Then it will blame the Arabs (even the unArabs of Iran). |
