All,
Mousavi was an Azeri (over 25% of the population). He was expected to win this group overwhelmingly along with the Sunni Arabs in Khuzistan. He also carried the educated Iranians in the cities.
Ahmedinidjad had to win an absolute majority (in a field of 4 candidates) in order to prevent a head to head run-off.
Consequently, to rig the election properly, he should have declared a slight majority (51% or 52%). The declaration that he got 63% didn`t match any polls or the large turnout.
He has pulled the legitimacy rug out from under the Islamic Republic. One of their selling points were relatively fair elections. (Manipulation was in advance by limiting who can run in the elections).
Unfortunately, this detaches Iran`s policy from the need to maintain any popular support. Consequently, there may be very aggressive rhetoric coming out of Tehran in opposition to Obama`s overtures. |
