It always amazes me that westerners assign their own mentality and concepts to others who have no connection to them.
According to British statistics from 1948, 20% of the Mandate land was owned privately by Arabs, including the West Bank and Gaza. This means, by inference, that about 10% of the Palestinians have an actual, legal claim to compensation.
It`s not about the land per se, but about the unacceptability of a non-Arab, non-Muslim, non-subservient country in the midst of the Arab world. It wouldn`t matter if Israel were Christian, Buddhist, Bahai or Pagan; all that matters is that a country independent of Arab rule exists within the Arab world. Once you can understand that, you have a better starting point.
Also, if you compensate the Palestinians, you`ll have to discuss compensating the Jewish refugees from Arab lands... something the Arabs wish to ignore for eternity. |
