Every now and then, when a society has a surfeit of young people, those young people ask the question `what sort of society will we have to live in for the rest of our lives"?
And the answer is always `a society which will not serve your elders as well as yourselves."
Twenty years ago the Chinese Communist Party jackbooted young people who asked that question.
Forty years ago America jackbooted young people who asked that question.
Will the young of iran be able to ask that most dangerous of quesitions?
Will they be allowed to win without the jackboot of conservatism coming down on their necks as it did in America and China?
I will be most surprised if tomorrow reveals a society willing to let democratic and popular change occur.
If it does, i will be most gratified.
But there is nothing in my life`s experience which makes me expect it.
Conservatives win in the short-run, and then they lose in the long run.
To everyone`s expense. |
