| I seem to remember that what the West used to call "East Germany" called itself the "Deutsche Demokratische Republik", despite a distinct lack of democracy, and little that looked particularly "Republican" about it either! Then there is the "Democratic People`s Republic of Korea" (North Korea). Or the "Socialist People`s Libyan Arab Great Jamahiriya" ? And the "Islamic Republic of Iran" and the "Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka"? It is worth noting that those countries that add the most descriptors before their names almost invariably seem to end up involved in a disproportionate amount of strife in the world! One suspects that they need to shout their self proclaimed nature in their names so loudly because they are aware that everyone else knows that their pretensions to "democracy" and the like are founded on little more than hot air. It seems a pity that "The Jewish Democratic State of Israel" seems so determined to go down a path so riddled with casualties! |
