Israel really only has two acceptable choices that I can see. It can have a "Jewish State of Israel" within its real borders (or even the enhanced version provided by the "green line" and maybe a little more still if it is prepared to swap other territory in return) or it can accept being ultimately incorporated into a larger secular, non ethnically based greater "Palestrael" (or "Israstine"), in which Jewish people will be in the minority.
But the world simply won`t allow Israel to turn the West Bank into part of an enlarged "Jewish State", whatever the more zealous religious extremists may believe their G_d gave them, and no matter what the secular hard right may have as their expansionary territorial ambition. I`m sure most Israelis really recognise this. It is time to turn down the rhetoric, look for genuinely viable solutions, and, above all, start learning to live with the neighbours rather than attacking them! |
