I sincerely believe that for all its wonderful literary qualities, which can truly be appreciated only by reading it in Hebrew, as an ideological and nationalistic tome, the Bible is quite horrible and has caused the Jews nothing but grief. If the Jews had treated the Bible like the Greeks treating Homer and Hesiod, or for that matter Herodotus and Thucydydes it would matter not. But the Bible has become a blueprint for the most egregious religious and sociopolitical behavior that is offputting to many non Jews. Perhaps it is part of the Jewish DNA but it should have been erased long time ago. Jewish particularism and racism is not what Israelis need now to guide them through these trying times. |
