The PA and Hamas are both now relying on the US to put pressure on Israel to make even further concession from where "negotiations left off"--without any corresponding Palestinian concessions on core issues (Jerusalem, right of return, Jewish interests in holy places, Palestinian recognition of the legitimacy of the Jewish state)--this policy will fail.
Ultimately, on a cost-benefit analysis, it is preferable for Israel to bear the costs of US-Israel confrontation if the alternative is to make Munich-style one-way concessions, even if the Obama Administration is intent on forcing them. Hamas and PA both have to pay to play. |
