Obama isn`t stupid and knows that any agreement between Israel and the Palestinians is going to require some sticks, yes, but also some very large carrots. If Israel stops buiding in the settlements (yes, stopping natural growth is annoying, but a relatively small sacrifice for eventual peace), accepts a Palestinian state, and negotiates strongly but fairly, the onus will be on Hamas to recognize Israel and moderate their actions and rhetoric.
Obama`s campaign was launched and financed by the Jewish community of Chicago and his staff is filled with Jewish people. He got 78% of the Jewish vote. This guy is probably the best friend Israel ever had, in that he`s not afraid to tell Israel the truth.- If Israel is willing to negotiate the way Ehud Barak did in 1999, they will wind up with economic and military strength and security beyond their wildest dreams. Possibly even EU and NATO membership. |
