Fortuna, I am impressed by your thoughful approach the last day since the speech. It would be great if more people would post something besides the well-worn arguments and positions.
I think you are correct that Israel has been losing the only war that really matters: the "battle for hearts and minds". Maybe they just had it too easy, since for years the words "Arab", "Muslim", etc. automatically aroused negative feelings in the west.
You characterize Obama`s statements as, politically correct mediatic truisms. Fair, perhaps, but I think that there is a spectrum, at one end is extremism, which is fed by fear. Fear is often fed by misconception. And misconception comes about due to ignorance, greed, power-seeking, and a host of other motivations.
I think what Obama set out to do is to bring the Islamic world, and hopefully the West along with it, back toward the center. If he succeeds, then I don`t suppose it matters if the message is politically correct. |
