Of course, there have been orthodox scientists etc. There are Islamic scientists as well, in case you hadn`t noticed.

The point I was making is that, like Islam in recent centuries, Judaism doesn`t have a particularly impressive track record in terms of running states, and that historically Jews, whether religious or not, have been most succesful within western secular societies.

Now that may change. Israel could become a shining religious Jewish beacon full of enlightened science and creativity. Or it may not. I just raised the question.

Bearing in mind Israeli criticism of Heradim and settlers, for instance, it seems worth asking how far Jewish religious extremism could go and how damaging it could be to the idea of Israel as a western democracy. What do you, in multi-cultural secular Australia think?
