While I am saddened at the recent events in Hungary, I am certainly not surprised. One year ago in the New York Times, Michael Kimmelman warned us about the upsurge of neo-Nazi`s in Budapest - and if you recall Ha`Aretz ran several articles about the demonstrations after the molotov cocktail incident. For those with better memories, you will recall that Hungarians at large have maintained a disgusting, seething hatred of Jews for, well, ever. Now the far right is gaining momentum in Hungarian politics and once again the Jews and Gypsies are scapegoated.

What this means for the rest of us is that we have been warned. The opponents of the Jewish people have spoken and if we do not brace ourselves and develop diplomatic think tanks on how to deal with this problem, we may once again find ourselves in 1944.

Ignoring the smoke doesn`t make the fire less severe.
