"Let Israel nurture the outposts, expand the settlements, clip the wings of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. It will help pave a shortcut for Iran from Gaza to Ramallah." (A. Eldar)
How true. And how deluded are those who believe that our occupation of a stateless population is a way to counter the Jihadists.
The Jihadists have actually nothing against the occupation. They may even be praying for it to last another decade. And another.
It only helps them gaining ground, morphing our territorial dispute with the Palestinians into a religious war. As the not so distant past has already amply proved. Think only Hamas, whose name no one had heard, up to the first Palestinian uprising, 1987.
"A phenomenon noticeable throughout history, regardless of place or period, is the pursuit by governments of policies contrary to their own interests." Historian Barbara W. Tuchman (twice a Pulitzer Prize winner) in `The March of Folly`. |
