It is very important for this President to gain respect, not just internationally, but within the USA. His country faces problems greater than any since the FDR Presidency. Quite apart from a poor inheritance in international matters, he also has a difficult domestic task before him.
And of course, in this, it is the country he leads which faces the consequences of his failure.
I am surprised by the timidity of his approach towards the Israelis, and I appreciate that Likud may be feigning resistance to limits on settlements to imply they are being forced into a great sacrifice - one puting their coalition government in peril. One would hope so, for in leaving the security fence off the agenda for now, he has shown incredible generosity. And anything less than gratitude would be really really stupid. |
