I am a Mexican whose ancestors are all eastern European Jews. To most Mexicans I "look like a Russian", but when I have met Russians and tell them that my family comes from their area, they immediately ask me if my ancestors were Jews or Armenians.
Modern genetic studies have shown that most Jews (even Ashkenazi) are of eastern Mediterranean origin from the paternal side. This means that we have a common ancestry with Palestinians, Lebanese and Syrians. Ashenazim have strong European admixture from the maternal side, but Oriental Jews are even closer to eastern Mediterranean populations. |
