RE: proposed amendment to a basic law that would add to the current oath taken by Knesset members the words "as a Jewish, Zionist and democratic state, and to its symbols and values." Is there a competent legal mind in the house; if so perhaps they can help articulate what PRECISELY those intended additional words mean. Let`s start with `Jewish` -- among Neturei Karta memebers, secular Israelis who don`t observe Shabat as they, let alone have a cheeseburger with bacon might not be "Jewish"; and that is but a single point for divergence. Let`s proceed to `Zionist` . The Zionism of Herzl and the Zionism of Jabotinski may not be one and the same. Why not go onto "Democratic" since we`re already having fun. Within the `Green Line` Israel is a democracy. Past the `Green Line` perhaps not quite. We hardly need to proceed to `symbols`. So, what PRECISELY are those words to mean? If no one has a clue -- why bother adding phrases of dubious meaning?
