I am really surprised that the average Israeli does not see this as the facist clap-trap that it is. Loyalty Oaths are sort of effective in adding cohesion to secret societies like our own Ku Klux Klan. But only facist governments feel it mecessary to create the "us versus them" climate that this sort of stuff engenders. And that of course, is the purpose. It will not prevent anything like terrorism. It will not even make people pay their taxes. Terrorists (and tax cheats) will probably be OK with fibbing and taking the oath. No-you are just creating a class to persecute. And the guys who take the oath get ID cards to show they are good Israelis. Why not make the other guys-the ones who do not take the oath-wear yellow crescents? It would save the interior ministry police the effort of stopping everybody for ID cards.
I had thought that "Never Again" meant never again to anybody shall this happen. Apparently, some feel that if it happened again to the right guys this time, that`s OK. |
