| "The bill calls for enabling the interior minister to lift someone`s citizenship if he or she fails to either serve in the Israel Defense Forces or do a term of national service." Right this instant the Defense Minister can call up ANYONE and EVERYONE - Jew, Arab, Christian, whatever - to serve in the IDF, and such service is compulsory. Of course, Arabs don`t serve in the IDF. But it ISN`T because they refuse to serve; it is because the Defense Minister won`t call them up to report for service. Get it? Lieberman can pass this law, and then the Defense Minister can simply REFUSE TO CALL ARABS UP FOR SERVICE. The result: any arab that the Defense Minister refused to call up (potentially, all of them) will lose their Israeli citizenship through no fault of their own. They would lose it thru an act of collusion between the Defense Minister and the Interior Minister. |
