Of course... In a free, democratic society and culture one is expected to challenge the government, to be skeptical and free to criticize, not to simply “rally around the flag” and provide obedient, unwavering support.
Those who think otherwise would make great citizens in totalitarian countries, in which attempts are/were made to create an atmosphere of “oneness,” with anyone opposing them deemed anti-whatever. This happened in Mussolini’s Italy, Nazi Germany, along with Soviet commissars accusing political dissidents (i.e. Solzhenitsyn) as being “anti-Soviet." Anyone serious about freedom and democracy doesn`t know whether to laugh or cry at the assertion that "you need to provide unequivocal support for Israel." |
