Title:#7 David - you got the idea right, but the SOFA changed this

David, you are right about not being able to overfly Iraq. But it`s gotten worse since Bush signed the Status Of Forces Agreement.

Under Bush`s SOFA agreement, Iraq regained control of their own airspace. Even the USAF flys over Iraq only with the permission of Iraq.

The US no longer has the authority to allow Israel overflight. Israel would have to go to the Iraqi Gov`t to get that permission....

But here is the nasty twist: The US is OBLIGATED under the SOFA to use our military forces to defend Iraq`s airspace!

So if you cross into Iraq without IRAQI permission, the US is bound under Bush`s agreement to defend Iraq`s airspace against an Israeli overflight.

If the US were to fail in our obligations, it would put our troops in GRAVE risk, and the political concussions would stop us from achieving our goals and national interests in Iraq.

In short, overfly Iraq and the IAF won`t be making it back to Israel.

Israel should avoid this USAF vs. IAF smackdown at all costs.
