"Just what does this mean? Can they serve in the IDF? Are they banned from certain jobs? Are they covered by the Right of Return law?"
Yes, they serve in the IDF. They are subject to compulsory draft. No, they are not banned from certain jobs (unless they want to be a Rabbi on the Rabbinical Court system). Yes, they are covered by the Right of Return law.
The problematic part is this: Marriage, divorce, burial, and conversion are handled by the Rabbinut for Israeli Jews (and by religious courts for Muslims and Christians as well). Thus, they cannot get married in Israel, have to make special arrangements for divorce (ie: prenup specifying divorce goes to the secular court system), and special arrangements for burial (cemeteries are run by the Rabbinut in most places). If it`s a woman who isn`t considered Jewish by the Rabbinut, her children will also not be able to marry in Israel (as Judaism passes through the maternal line). |
