This idea that Hamas must be very well-behaved and peaceful before progress can be made on two-states is back to front.
The IRA, like Hamas, bombed the mainland, shot soldiers and political enemies and swore they would never recognise N Ireland as part of the UK. Ne-ver.
If we had said, ah well, there can be no talks or power-sharing then, we would still be at the same place of daily conflict and murder. It was the talks and compromises that changed all that, they stopped their military campaign because they had got as much as they`d get at the peace table. They now recognise N Ireland as part of the UK as well.
Hamas is essentially no different, no matter how much we demonise them. `But they don`t recognise Israel as a Jewish state` is the usual lament. Well they wouldn`t, would they, while they remain locked in their ghetto and Israel builds settlements all over the WB. Maybe they would recognise Israel as an Israeli state?
Time to get talking and leave the excuses on one side. |
