I think that the words that the Pope said at the airport are the most that we could expect of him. He is no longer German. He is the head of the Roman Catholic Church, residing in the Vatican. He is the Bishop of Rome. He is no longer Josef Ratzinger. He is Benedict XVI.
He may not nor can he speak as Josef Ratzinger, unless he resigns from the papacy. Popes usually finish their careers `lying in state`
Thus those who wanted to hear the pope speak as Josef Ratzinger can never more achieve their wish. There are other ecumenical things that he said for which I take him to task. That`s another subject. Judaism and Christianity,"never the twain shall meet". |
