| Why the reaction? As you mention wellfare-relience, army-dodging & political (what americans call) special-interest lobbying, make Haredim a problem on the political level. There is also the fear of religious coercion/recruitment which is amplified by tfilin at the high school gates. This is most significant. Long , are certainly in for a range of demographic pickles. Kahane would be happy. I would probably choose to stand and defend these Bnei Brackians with the gall to cross road walk across town. On the grounds of religious freedom & opposition to racism. But this is problematic. These are not the grounds on which they defend themselves. They would not extend this freedom to christians or Muslims in their neigborhoods. In fact, they would form their own action committees to repel Reform Jews from other people`s neighborhoods. This is a terrible mess. |
