| Live and let live. Do leftist liberals live by this tennet? Almost. Do Haredim live by this tennet? So - so. Why so - so? Because they are missionaries; they trespass my freedom and attempt to make out of me one of them, make me different from who I am. Arabs don`t do that. Some Haredim do. So liberal left-wingers are reacting just like educated, assimilated Viennese Jews in 1930 used to at the sight of newly arrived Jews from Galitzia or Bukowina. "Ostjuden". Back then it was: "I hate them for elliciting anti-Semitic reactions among my neighbours among whom I desperately want to be accepted" (Fear of non-acceptance, which proved to be well based). Now it is: "I hate them because they transform my country from an enlightened place to a XVII-century oscurantist place". (A fear that might be well based too.) |
