The Lebanese Army has worn out obsolete equipment.

And it badly needs upgrading. Strong national institutions are required in Lebanon. The Army is one which has support from all political parties and after it`s defeat of an Al Queada affiliate several years ago it has been very popular.

The Army was able to stop the last outbreak of internecine fighting a year later.

One of the debates going on in the last year is over whether to integrate Hisbollah forces into the Army. The current situation is that will not be done as the improvements in the Lebanese Army should allow it to take over the defense of the border.

In the long run this might work out well for Israel IF it is willing to seek normal relations with Lebanon.

This will be harder than with Syria as the Lebanese are pretty pissed at Israel over the Lebanon Wars and the occupation.
