Amira Hass: Amira Hass / Israel knows that peace just doesn't pay

With the latest Israeli election, most of the population voted for a centrist leadership, Kadima (28 seats in Knesset), which continued the peace process to defining parameters unlike other governments in making concessions to the Palestinians. Allegations of corruption by PM Olmert ruined the progress Kadima initiated. Second, some of the electorate voted Likud (27 seats in Knesset) also seeking peace but with "toughness or reciprocity " with our adversaries in mind - knowing the two-state solution is inevitable. They evidently claim they genuinely seek peace. Labour and Meretz also have significant backing in Israel. Now the right winged parties are basically misguided Israelis, but nice people, who aren`t understanding of the principles of coexistence and compromises which are necessary for peace in the region, essentially because they haven`t lived it, that is, with any Arab neighbours, etc. So it`s not the industries` decisions ultimately, it`s the people.
